Bicycle Urbanism - Zoll+ Mag
Over the past weeks STC's research guru Florian Lorenz and co-founder Shannon Bufton have been working on a new paper for the winter issue of 'zoll+ The Austrian Magazine of Landscape and Open Space'. The invitation to submit came about after Florian's recent presentation in Vienna on Beijing's bicycle lifestyles. A Vienna chapter of STC is also in the works - keep an eye open for stcvie.com.
The article is entitled
'Beijing's pedal-based livelihoods as a muse for bicycle urbanism'
Abstract is as follows ;
Pedal-powered vehicles offer yet unexplored potentials to restructure urban landscapes as socially just, environmentally benign and culturally vibrant spaces. Nowadays bicycle mainstreaming is promoted by infrastructure, policy and education measures but innovative approaches in urban open space may even more deeply embed pedal-powered vehicles in everyday urban life. In this paper we present urban research on pedal-based livelihoods in China, contextualizing it as strategies for creating urban environments vibrant with bicycle cultural life, an approach we put forward as bicycle urbanism.
